What is IVF?

• Day 5: On day 5, the embryo should contain around 80 – 160 cells. The embryologists will determine the best embryo for transfer, and they will be taken for implantation

Surgical Procedure

The first step in the surgical procedure involves taking medications to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. Once the eggs are produced, the doctor will try to retrieve the eggs from the ovary. An ultrasound will help guide the doctor, who will insert a small needle through your vagina into the ovaries. This process is painless and safe.

The doctor will then suction the fluid from the follicles that contain the egg in the ovary and put it into a test tube. The test tube will be sent to the labs to determine the maturity of the eggs. The mature eggs will then be fertilized using the sperm. After 3 – 5 days of fertilization, the doctor will implant the embryo back into the uterus. It will be done using a thin tube called a catheter which will slide in through the cervix into the uterus and place the embryo.

If the embryo attaches itself to the uterus, pregnancy will occur.
